City of Heroes / Villains and LEGO Universe Go Free-To-Play

Both City of Heroes / Villains and LEGO Universe have announced that they are heading towards free-to-play / freemium payment models in the near future.

This adds them to a list that has swelled recently to also include Age of Conan and Fallen Earth.

This highlights to me perhaps an unexpected impact of the F2P / Freemium conversion process – it may actually be removing players from subscription-based titles. There will be those who don’t have time to play several games so pick the free one for their limited time, or perhaps feel that the value they get from one game for free is worth more than the value they get from another title at $15 a month.

As such, the only way to keep those players is to offer a F2P / Freemium option as well.

It really is the end of the subscription model’s glory days. Hope you are paying attention, EA / BioWare.
